The Čakovec Museum of Međimurje, housed in an Old Town mansion, was founded in 1954 as the Municipal Museum. The permanent display was opened in 1955.

In the same year, it was placed under the protection of the state as a cultural-historical monument of the highest order. Today the Čakovec Museum of Medimurje consists of several departments: Archaeological, Cultural-Historical, Historical, and Ethnographic, and also includes the Art Gallery with the Ladislav Kralj of Medimurje Memorial Collection, the Exhibition Hall, and the Museum Library.

The Museum also has a restorer's and conservator's workshop and a photographic laboratory. It covers a total area of 5,000 sq. m of exhibition and working space in an Old Town mansion. Collections includes 18,993 exhibits originating from Međimurje and covering such diverse areas as archaeology, cultural history, history, ethnography and fine arts. As its owner, the Museum is concerned with the protection and restoration of the Čakovec Old Town complex and St. Helen's Chapel in Senkovec. The permanent display of the Čakovec Museum of Medimurje occupies the north-western wing of the first and the entire second floor of the Old Town mansion.

The Museum administration rooms, the Library and the Conservator's Workshop occupy the first floor of the building. The mezzanine floor houses the stooroom, the Exhibition Hall for seasonal exhibitions, the Wedding Ceremony Room, the Restorer's and Conservator's Workshop, as well as temporary facilities. The ground floor houses the storeroom. Located in the atrium of the mansion is the collection of stone monuments.
