A sign warning miners not to stand on the conveyor belt that took fresh cut coal away from the seam. Used between 1950 and 1990.
Conveyor belts replaced the steam and electric winding systems that had been used to recover the coal as mechanisation modernised mining in the middle of the 20th century.
The NCB and health and safety legislation ensured that clear, easy to understand signs were produced to warn of the potential dangers that were present in mines. Despite these signs, weary miners were often tempted to ride on the conveyors, sometimes, resulting in serious accidents.
