Starstruck

For Museums at Night 2014, the Library and Museum of Freemasonry is hosting a special evening display of the stars amongst its collections on Thursday 15th May from 6pm to 8pm. Stars are amongst the most commonly seen symbols on masonic objects and buildings. Like many symbols, stars have multiple meanings. The five pointed star is an ancient symbol of good luck and good health. The Greek mathematician Pythagorus regarded it as an emblem of perfection or the universe. For Freemasons it denotes the five points of fellowship. The six pointed star is probably most widely recognised as the symbol of the Jewish faith, the Star or seal of David. Formed of two equilateral interlaced triangles, in Masonic terms this symbol is known as the Seal of Solomon and is the badge of Royal Arch Freemasonry. From 6pm to 8pm on Thursday 15th May 2014, a special Library and Museum free pop up display will take place on the star-studded mosaic floor outside the Grand Temple at Freemasons’ Hall, London. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see the magnificent ceiling of the Grand Temple, decorated as a night sky.
