Turner's Britain: Landscape, History and Society

J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) is widely agreed to be our greatest painter. He was also insatiably curious throughout his long career and incessant travels, becoming an acute observer of British life during a period of dramatic social, political and technological change, which included the Industrial Revolution, the passing of the Great Reform Act and decades of war with France. Speaker Barry Venning is an author and historian of British art who teaches for the Open University, and has appeared on two BBC documentaries about Turner. Advance booking required. Talks last for approximately 45 minutes with a short time for questions.
