Parlour Symbolique
Freud and Eros Late Opening - Performance Art
Parlour Symbolique explores the idea of the house as embodiment the psyche, detached from the domestic sphere and immersed in the symbolic. The event shall highlight the house as mind through an oneiric series of glimpses, whispers, and veiled echoes evoking the fantasies and explorations which have etched themselves invisibly into its walls. Freud’s presence and thought sits at the centre of this uncanny tapestry like a camera obscura; reflecting strange echoes of memory which haunt the space. Parlour Symbolique shall present new site-specific works from eleven contemporary live artists that engage with these aspects of the house, its history, and Freud’s thinking. Each work shall inhabit a different part of the space, some roaming, some static, providing an extension of the house’s unique atmosphere which engages the audience interactively, encouraging new, exciting ways of experiencing the space.
The Parlour Collective is a group of contemporary international artists which produce shows that use the medium of performance to explore the mechanism of historical and psycho-geographical engagement. The site-specific events they create delve into the mythologies of the everyday, and the trail of history which surrounds our experience of space.
The Parlour Collective has produced shows across the world in spaces ranging from antequated operating theatres to small islands. They have exhibited in a wide range of countries including France, England, Norway and Portugal.
This late opening event is part of a wide ranging and imaginative public programme of events, talks, films and performances accompanying the exhibition 'Freud and Eros: Love, Lust and Longing' - 22 October 2014 - 22 February 2015.
