For much of the 20th century, American culture,
images and products led the world. The skyscraper,
the coca-cola bottle, Andy Warhol’s soup cans and
numerous other iconic objects became globally
recognised symbols of progress, prosperity and
cultural and commercial power. This course tells
the story of American art and design from the early
days of industrialisation to the glory years of the
late 20th century. It explores the complex story
of how design developed as a profession and as
a leisure activity reflecting the national traditions
of self-improvement and self-expression. And it
investigates the growing confidence of artists and
architects that ultimately led to the creation of
International Modernism. The course covers
principal movements from the arts and crafts,
including Shaker and Aesthetic styles, to postmodernism
and the work of Frank Gehry and
Robert Venturi. It also includes major styles
such as Impressionism, Surrealism, and Abstract
Expressionism, and major trends including
streamlining, Pop and Industrial Chic.
