Artist: Duflos, Claude, printmaker - French artist, 1665-1727; Date(s): 1778; Classification(s): print, print, engraving; Acquisition: given by Charrington, John, 1935 [P.6709-R] Description: An allusion to the coronation of Voltaire at the Comédie Française on the 30th March 1778, after the performance of his play "Irène". Voltaire had just returned to France after an exile of nearly thirty years. A bust of the author on the stage and Mme Vestris crowned it with a wreath of laurels. However, Voltaire had already experienced a similar ceremony with the marquise de Villette and the actor Brizard in his private lodge. This print is a synthesis of the two incidents.
