Cats were domestic pets and symbols of gods such as Bastet and Ra. The Egyptian word for cat was miw (like miow).
Cat, legs broken. 153mm high. The eyes have remains of the gold gilt. Late Dynastic-Graeco Roman. Such cats were either votive figures or were put on top of coffins for cats. The cat here probably represents Bastet who was portrayed from the 26th Dynasty simply as a cat. Part of Rustafjaell collection purchased by Wellcome at auction 1906.
