Pottery vessel black coloured on rim. Round base. Naqada written on vase. This type of pot dates to the Predynastic Naqada II Period (3500-3100BC). The Naqada Period is named after the type site in Upper Egypt just north of Thebes. Purchased by Wellcome at auction in 1932. Black topped red ware is a fine red pottery with blackened rim. How such vessels were decorated has been much debated. (See Hendrickx, S., Friedman, R. and Loyens, F. 2000. Experimental Archaeology concerning Black-topped red war from Ancient Egypt and the Sudan.
