Win a signed copy of Views of Matlock Bath by George Miles
George Miles, Views of Matlock Bath The photographs of George Miles have been described by Wolf Hall author Hilary Mantel as "the dark art of kitsch" while others see the influence of Miles' tutor, the renowned American photographer Stephen Shore and the new topographics movement that swept through American photography in the 1970s.
But the Derbyshire-based photographer also explores the idea of the picturesque and the great British landscape tradition of Constable, Wright of Derby and Cozens while teasing out the tensions to be found in the man made landscape.
Views of Matlock Bath is a beautiful collection of contemplative large format photographs of a scenic English spa town accompanied by a short history of the area and an introductory essay by artist, curator of and writer Jeremy Millar.
