Howard Hodgkin paintings turn up in a Wiltshire workshop and head for a London exhibition
Howard Hodgkin, Another Rainbow, Gagosian Gallery© Gagosian Gallery A forgotten series of Howard Hodgkin paintings have been found in a print workshop in Wiltshire where they have lain since the early nineties.
The thirty hand-painted gouaches, called the Indian Waves series, were completed by Hodgkin during 1990 and 1991 and are typical of the veteran painter’s colourful Indian works.
Hodgkin made the first of many trips to India in 1964 and a steady stream of paintings – from Coming Up From the Beach (1970-72) to The Sea, Goa (2013) has ensued. This latest find is full of his trademark bursts of intense colour and broad washes.
The series of thirty works on paper saw Hodgkin employ a carbonundrum printing technique, which offers an added physicality to the surface of the paper ground, in readiness for the next stage of hand painting.
Indian Waves is the only collection of pictures for which he also used handmade Indian Khadi paper, which affords further expressive potential with its distinctive and random textures.
The paintings will be shown in public for the first time at Gagosian in Davies Street, London opening on November 28 2014.
