Spahis Museum

Musée des Spahis

No other town was better suited to harbour the memory of the 150 years' history of this North African cavalry, which had a special place in the French army from 1800 to 1814, and from 1830 to 1964.

The Spahis fought for the French Empire all over the world, and the silhouette of the galloping warriors with their burnous flying is part of French popular imagery.

Housed in 1991 in a venerable building, the museum shows some memories of the exceptionnal past of this calvary.Trumpet banners, unit pennants, harnesses, tougs (half pikes decorated with horse tails)…remind a century of cavalry.
