Gorenjski muzej

Gorenjska museum is a regional museum situated in Kranj - castle Khislstein, Town Hall, Ossuary and Prešern House. We have dislocated units in Bohinj Tomaž Godec Museum, Oplen House and The Alpine Dairy Museum.

CASTLE KHISLSTEIN
The castle is situated in the city center of Kranj, where was the fortified area from ancient times to the early Middle Ages. The castle was formed during the 15th and 19 century, today's the image of the castle got into the 17 century. The renovated rooms of the castle Khislstein are intended for new permanent exhibition Beautiful Gorenjska, which takes you across the main turning points of life from the early Middle Ages 'till today.
In the castle is also temporary exhibition, academic library and pedagogical room for our youngest.

TOWN HALL
The Kranj Town Hall is one of the most important cultural monuments of Renaissance architecture in Slovenia. Open to visitors are the Renaissance Hall and three permanent exhibitions: works of the academy trained sculptor Lojze Dolinar (1893-1970), an archaeological exhibition entitled The Iron Thread and an ethnographic exhibition on folk art in the Gorenjska region. There is also a gallery on the ground floor, intended for temporary exhibitions.
Guided tours of the permanent exhibitions are available for groups. Please call in advance.

PREŠEREN HOUSE
A memorial museum has been set up in the house where the most prominent Slovene poet, Dr. France Prešeren resided from autumn 1846 until February 8, 1849. A contemporarily conceived permanent exhibition showcases the poet's life and is enhanced by the display of furniture of the period.
Each anniversary of Prešeren's birth and death sees a special exhibition that sheds new light on the poet's life and work.

OSSUARY
After intermittent excavations on the extensive Old Slavic burial ground beside the Kranj parish church between 1953 and 1973, an archaeological monument was set up to the north of the church. One can see the foundations of a Late Antiquity octagonal baptistery with a semi-circular apse on the east side, the remains of the circular baptistery lower walls dating from late 13th century, the remains of a cemetery chapel and the tomb of the Eghk counts from the 15th century and a newer ossuary made up of carefully laid layers of skulls and limb bones of the deceased.

TOMAŽ GODEC MUSEUM
The museum bears the name of its former owner, Tomaž Godec, a skilled tanner, excellent sportsman, mountaineer and tourist worker in the Bohinj area. He was one of the initiators of the so-called Bohinj Rebellion of 1941 and was shot as a hostage in Mauthausen.

OPLEN HOUSE
The Oplen House, situated below the Studor hamlet, is a museum of the dwelling culture of the Bohinj area in the beginning of the 20th century. The interior features the authentic fittings of its former owners. The house is a typical Bohinj homestead, which combines the dwelling and agricultural building under one roof. The house is of particular interest as it hosts a so called črna kuhinja (lit. »black kitchen«), or smoke room, still in use to this day.

THE ALPINE DAIRY MUSEUM
This museum in Stara Fužina is located in a former village cheese making facility. In 1883 a cheese making plant was built in Stara Fužina in Bohinj, where cheese was produced until as late as 1967. On display at the museum is the original cheese making shop along with original cheese making tools, cheese vats and accessories, as well as objects used by the shepherds in their work in the mountain pastures. You can also see a wooden interior of a shepherd's hut from the Zajamniki settlement, dating from 1849.
