In the Spotlight illuminates unique objects from the Imperial War Museum collection for a limited period of time and explores the fascinating stories behind them. Find out about the story of Captain Charles Fryatt, who was captured and executed during the First World War. Having saved the lives of his crew when faced with attack by a German submarine U-33 in March 1915, a year later his vessel was surrounded by German destroyers and he was captured, court martialled and executed for ramming the German U-boat, causing international outcry.
The In The Spotlight display, containing the war damaged port scuttle light from Fryatt’s ship and the medal he was posthumously awarded, continues the Museum’s current nautical season.
