Ships, sea monsters, seahorses, sirens and sea maidens are all to be discovered at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum in the beautiful ‘The De Morgans and the Sea’ exhibition by renowned artists Evelyn De Morgan and her husband, William.
The wonderful collection, normally housed at The De Morgan Centre in London, predominantly showcases the stunning work of Evelyn and includes her paintings of mythological subjects such as Ariadne and her depictions of Hans Christian Anderson’s much adored little mermaid. This exhibition focuses on the sea, which was a major source of inspiration for Evelyn’s paintings and William’s Arts and Crafts ceramics.
Sue Hayward, Heritage Manager, said: “We held a major retrospective of Evelyn De Morgan’s work in 1996-7, which proved to be so incredibly popular it was extended by 6 weeks. So we are delighted to be working with the De Morgan Centre once again, this time on an exhibition that showcases the talent of both Evelyn and her husband, the arts and crafts potter William. Each was a creative phenomenon and each broke the mould. We’ve chosen to focus on the theme of the sea, as this was a major source of inspiration for both artists– from stunning medieval galleons, to giant fish and mythological sea monsters –where better to celebrate the sea than in Bournemouth?”
