Jasdeep Singh explores the causes, impact and legacy of the Indian Mutiny of 1857.
Last year the Bank of England issued a new polymer £5 note containing traces of animal fat. Despite some protests, the Bank is to retain the new note. 160 years ago, cartridges greased with pig and cow fat issued to Indian soldiers triggered the most brutal period in British Indian history, culminating in massacres and bloody war.
The Mutiny resulted in a drastic change in the relationship between Britain and India. Jasdeep will explore how the effects of the period were felt much further afield, asking many questions about loyalty, empire and independence.
Jasdeep Singh is a Community Curator at the National Army Museum.
