Film showing: Refugee Blues and Refugees: In Our Eyes
Join us at the Wiener Library for a lunchtime showing of two short films about refugees.
Refugee Blues, a film by Stephan Bookas and Tristan Daws, is set to the verses of W.H. Auden's 1939 poem 'Refugee Blues'. It charts a day in 'the jungle', the refugee camp outside Calais. More intimate and unlike much of what has been seen in the mass media, this documentary poem counterpoints the camp’s harsh reality of frequent clashes with the French riot police with its inhabitants’ longing for a better future.
In Refugees: In Our Eyes, the current refugee crisis is seen through the eyes of a group of teenagers from London as they encounter activists, artists and those directly involved. Featuring Syrian refugee and activist Ahmad al-Rashid, AOI World Illustration award winner Olivier Kugler, the Jewish Museum, and ice&fire theatre and campaigner Onjali Rauf who has organized aid to the Calais Camp with her charity Making Herstory. Refugees: In Our Eyes was produced on a weeklong film workshop at Camden Summer University in conjunction with filmmaker Suzanne Cohen.
