Getting to Grips with Abstract Art

Coinciding with the exhibition Victor Pasmore: Towards a New Reality, this session will look at the historical background and rationale of abstract art from Piet Mondrian’s spiritual and regulated abstraction to Jackson Pollock’s drips and splashes and beyond. Led by Frank Woodgate.
Ways of Looking: The Golden Section and the Colours Red, White and Blue

Discover just some of the theories used by artists to bring order and meaning to their work. Begin with the sacred geometry of the Golden Section which has inspired thinkers from all disciplines before exploring the symbolism and significance of the colours red, white and blue. A Brief History of Women in Art

Although women have been making art for centuries, many female artists have been forgotten or struggled to be recognised in the traditional narrative of the Western canon of art. Explore how women have been represented – and misrepresented – throughout history and how female artists, particularly since the 20th century, have challenged that landscape. Led by Linda Casey.
Inspirations of the City: Art of the River and the City
Sat 8 July, 11am–1.30pm
Discover how the very different landscapes of the River Thames and the City of London have influenced and inspired artists from the historical to the contemporary. Explore views of the river and interpretations of the Thames’ eventful history, as well as the wealth of modern and contemporary public art found in the City of London. Led by Alexandra Epps.
An Armchair Tour of Tate Britain and Tate Modern
Sat 5 August, 11am–1.30pm
Explore two of the world’s most famous art galleries without leaving Chichester. Take a virtual tour through Tate Britain’s collection of British art from the 1500s to the present day, and explore highlights from Tate Modern’s international modern art collection.Led by Ian Swankie.
