Live On: Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme

On the 1st July 2016 Richmond Riverside, in Richmond upon Thames, will be transported back to 1916 as characters, based on local women contributing to the war effort, face devastating news from the front line. This newly commissioned promenade dance theatre piece marks the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme. With over 57,000 casualties, the first day of conflict remains the bloodiest day in the history of the British Arm and it was felt deeply at home. Live On focusses on the deep emotional impact created by war and is a contemporary memorial not just to those who served an died, but to those who lost loved ones - and the strength they showed to carry on. Part of an extraordinary series of arts experiences connecting people with the First World War in Richmond upon Thames, the piece has been created in collaboration by choreographer Sarah Dowling, as Associate Artist of the Royal Opera House who has worked with the National Theatre, Headlong, Punchdrunk and the RSC. Performances will be at 1pm and 6pm on Friday 1st July.
