The Shrewsbury Canal was constructed in 1797. It immediately hastened the delivery, and lowered the price, of coal from the East Shropshire coalfields to the county town. In 1835 Shrewsbury was connected to the main canal network of the country by the construction of the Newport canal, from Wappenshall on the Shrewsbury canal, to Norbury Junction on the Birmingham and Liverpool canal.
The canal fell into disuse during the 1930s and was eventually abandoned in the 1960s. The Shrewsbury and Newport Canals Trust was formed in 2000 with the objective of restoring these canals to their former glory.
The exhibition will include maps, photographs, a timeline and artefacts, illustrating the history of canal building, domestic life on the canals, the methods used and the progress being made in the restoration of our Shrewsbury canal.
