In 1934, the Post Office assembled a group of eminent art experts who sought out high-quality art for use in publicity posters. They commissioned work from many British artists, including Bloomsbury’s own Vanessa Bell. But her design proved so controversial it helped trigger the Poster Advisory Group’s acrimonious collapse after only a few years. What went wrong?
