Sexual Politics and Everyday Life in Occupied Poland, 1939-1945

This lecture will be given by Professor Maren Roeger (University of Augsburg) in recogntion of her acheivement as joint winner of Category A of the 2014 Fraenkel Prize. Sexual policies formed a core component of National Socialist racial state and polity, both in the territories that were part of Nazi Germany before 1938, and in the occupied territories. In occupied Poland, the germans imposed a 'prohibition of contact' (Umgangsverbot) between the occupiers and the local Polish population, a restriction which covered both social and sexual encounters. This model of absolute racial segregation, however, was never fully implemented in everyday life. This talk will attempt to explore the wide range of sexual contact that occurred between occupiers and local inhabitants. The speaker will present individual stories against the backdrop of Nazi policies, but will also consider the system of prostitution installed by the Nazi regime and the role of sexual violence in the occupation. Professor Dr. Maren Roeger has held a position at the University of Augsburg since 2015, and was previously a research fellow at the German Historical Institute in Warsaw. Her main fields of interest include the history of Europe in the twentieth century, and the history of National Socialism and World War II in particular.
