Sunderland's First World War: The Home Front

At that time Sunderland was a major centre of shipbuilding, producing both warships and cargo vessels vitally important to the war effort. This made it a target for the Germans and the town was under constant threat of attack. Find out how successful the enemy was at breaching its defences. Men from all over Wearside joined the armed forces in great numbers leaving behind their families, homes and jobs, many never to return. Women found themselves taking up roles previously done by the men. Discover how their world would never be the same again. The exhibition includes ship models, photographs and artefacts to tell this fascinating and little known aspect of Sunderland's past.
