What is the future for transport in our ever burgeoning cities? Prof John Miles of the University of Cambridge/Arup asks what might be required to deliver publicly-accessible transport services which are sufficiently attractive and effective to tempt people away from using their cars? It is postulated that an avalanche effect could be triggered if cities provide transport systems as spontaneous and convenient to use as private cars, yet as affordable as a bus. What might such a future look like and what it will take to make it happen?
