Description: Henry Stein Turrell was an activist in the field of educational reform under Victoria, and it was under his name that the College of Teachers petitioned Queen Victoria for their charter of incorporation. He was a resident of Brighton and his good works were remembered there also at his death in 1863 by the endowment of this prize which, as the inscription details, was to be awarded at the Brighton Centre to the recipient of the highest School Certificate in the University Local Examinations. This example is a bronze specimen from the designers' workshop, which was passed down to their descendant Allan Gairdner Wyon from whose collection it has come to the Museum.
