Description: Edmund Parkes was a Victorian physician, whose principal fame is as a pioneer of hygiene using his experience as head of the civil hospital in the Dardanelles during the Crimean War. When the Army Medical School was established, he became Chair of Hygiene there and when he died in 1876 the School established this triennial prize in his memory, awarded to an executive officer on full pay submitting the best essay on the subject of hygiene. This award earnt the recipient 75 guineas and a gold medal, but a bronze medal was awarded annually to the best student in hygiene. The Museum's example is in bronze, but comes from the collection of a descendant of the designers, and bears no award inscription, so is probably a specimen example kept at the workshop.
