Description: The state of Rajkot lies in the Indian province of Gujarat, and dates its foundation to c. 1620, with a period under Mughal rule in the eighteenth century. Its ruling family have been at the head of the state since its foundation, and in recent generations all the males have been educated at Rajkumar College in the city. The current ruler as of 2007 and since 1973 is Thakur Saheb Shri Manoharsinhji Pradyumansinhji. His great-grandfather Bavajirajsinhji Mehramanji (1862-90) had five sons and one daughter, all but one of the sons dying before coming of age. Among these shortlived princes was Kumar Karansinhji Bavajirajsinhji, whose likeness this medal bears. He was also educated at the Rajkumar College, and this prize for recitation was established in his memory after his death in 1903. The medal for the prize was designed by Allan Wyon, and this is a white-metal specimen from the Wyon workshop.
