Description: Cotton band sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross-stitch. The edges are bound with green watered silk ribbon. The sampler is worked horizontally with repeating floral border patterns at the top and bottom and three small geometric border patterns making sections containing an alphabet, numerals 1-13, a verse and an inscription. They read 'Virtue/Virtue's the greatest beauty of the mind/ The noblest ornament of human kind/ Virtue's our safeguard our guiding star/ That stir's up reason when our senses err.
