Description: John Howard was an early user of statistics in the study of social welfare, famous for work on prisons, and in 1873 the Statistical Society, founded out of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1833 and now the Royal Statistical Society, founded a prize in his honour, the medal for which was designed by Alfred Wyon. This piece is a specimen of the design from Wyon's workshop, passed on to his descendant Allan Gairdner Wyon and from his descendants to the Museum. As Earl Fitzwilliam was one of the Statistical Society's earliest members it is in many ways fitting that the piece should rest here.
