Description: The Royal Geographical Society established the award of a gold Patron's Medal in 1839 on the basis of a gift of King William IV. It is awarded annually "for the encouragement and promotion of geographical science and discovery". In 1901 the original design was updated to this new version by Allan Wyon, after the original design by his ancestor William Wyon. This example is a bronze specimen of the design from Wyon's workshop, which was passed down to his descendant, Allan Gairdner Wyon of whose own rework of the medal for George V the Museum also has a specimen, and from there to the Museum through his family.
