Cramped and Threatened, Matjaž Zupančič in Malá Drama

This year's premiere of Zupančič's play This Play Will End will also be its first performance. This raises the question of how to place it in a broader historical context. We will address this question through an analysis of the productions of Zupančič's plays that have been staged at the Malá Drama: The Exorcists of the Devil (11 December 1991), Vladimir (11 March 1999), The New Race (25 September 2020) and This Play Will End (12 April 2024). How do the dramatis personae find themselves in these plays, which also share some thematic parallels? What drives them? How much comedy is there in these texts and how much tragedy? With Gašper Troha, Director of the Slovenian Theatre Institute, we will seek answers to these questions by looking into theatre history through critical writings, photographs and recordings of performances.
