Verse 1: 'Jocky he came here to woo, On ae feast-day when we were fu'; And Jenny pat on her best array, When she heard that Jocky was come that way.'
The 'Scots Musical Museum' is the most important of the numerous eighteenth- and nineteenth-century collections of Scottish song. When the engraver James Johnson started work on the second volume of his collection in 1787, he enlisted Robert Burns as contributor and editor. Burns enthusiastically collected songs from various sources, often expanding or revising them, whilst including much of his own work. The resulting combination of innovation and antiquarianism gives the work a feel of living tradition.
According to Glen (1900) this song, which 'appears to be very ancient', was first printed in William McGibbon's third collection, published in 1755. He further mentions that 'there is another tune in the Blaikie Manuscript, 1692, named 'Jocky wood a wooing go', which suits the words of the old song, and is perhaps the original melody'. The melody contained in the 'Museum', however, did not appear in any of the major Scottish song collections published prior to 1755.
