The Association of Mining and Electrical Engineers awarded this certificate, first class, to George Joseph Latham on 12th June, 1931.
Electrical safety was critical underground. Any stray electrical spark could easily cause a major explosion of firedamp gas or coal dust.
The training and certification of mine electricians in the maintenance and use of mine electrical equipment was crucial. It made what was potentially a very dangerous power source, well regulated, safe and efficient to use in mining.
