Oil on canvas. "Grey and Red (2)" addresses us primarily in terms of proportion and colour. Shiraishi's works can be thought of as developments of the "hard-edge" strand of geometric abstraction, seen in the work of American painters such as Barnett Newman and Ellsworth Kelly. There is a sharp division between the two colours, and although there is little sense of depth, Shiraishi plays with space by allowing the lighter colour to apparently recede while the stronger colours stands forward. A sense of depth is also created by the textured surface of the work. Shiraishi was born in Tokyo and has lived in Vancouver and London.
