The Biological Museum at Skansen

Biologiska Museet - Skansen

The museums is temporarily closed.

The Biological Museum was inaugurated on November 11, 1893. The museum was built in 1892-93 on the private initiative of conservator Gustaf Kolthoff to showcase Sweden's animals and nature. The building was designed by architect Agi Lindegren. Inside, the Biological Museum contains a large 360° diorama that occupies almost the entire upper part. The diorama features background paintings by Bruno Liljefors and Gustaf Fjæstad.

The city of Stockholm purchased the Biological Museum and transferred it to Skansen in 1970. The museum closed indefinitely in 2017. In 2018, the museum building was declared a historical monument by the county administrative board, the strongest protection a building can receive in Sweden.

Since 2018, Skansen has been working in stages to maintain and restore the museum. With grants from the county administrative board, the museum's skylights have been restored and Bruno Liljefors' background paintings have been conserved. All efforts are carried out in close consultation with the county administrative board.
