National Museum of Medieval Art

Muzeu Kombëtar i Artit Mesjetar

Nestled in the heart of southeastern Albania, the National Museum of Medieval Art in Korçë is a cultural treasure trove dedicated to the spiritual and artistic heritage of the Albanian Orthodox tradition. Opened in 1980 and beautifully renovated in 2016, the museum houses one of the richest collections of medieval Christian art in the Balkans.

With over 7,000 works—icons, fresco fragments, liturgical objects, and textiles—the museum presents a vivid journey through the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods, spanning the 13th to the 18th centuries. Masterpieces by renowned iconographers such as Onufri, David Selenica, and the Zografi brothers offer visitors a glimpse into the refined artistry and deep spirituality of medieval Albania.

The museum’s modern building, with clean lines and ambient lighting, provides a serene setting for viewing its most prized possessions, including the dramatic “Golden Wall” of icons. Its thematic galleries, such as the White Balcony and the Red Room, highlight different stylistic eras and schools of iconography.

This museum is not just a repository of religious art—it’s a powerful expression of cultural identity, resilience, and the enduring legacy of Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Albania.
