Museum der Universitaet Tuebingen MUT

The Museum of the University of Tübingen MUT was founded in 2006 as a central institution of the University of Tübingen. It functions as an overarching institution for the approximately 70 university collections. The tasks of MUT include organizing the scientific collections in a responsible manner, preserving them for future generations and making them usable for research, teaching, public education and profiling the university.
A central house of MUT is the Museum "Ancient Cultures" at Hohentuebingen Castle. On an area of 2000 m², it displays around 4,600 exhibits from seven archaeological collections of the University of Tübingen over a period of around 40,000 years. Among them are the famous "Tuebinger Waffenlaeufer", a rare ancient Egyptian sacrificial chamber and the largest number of original exhibits of UNESCO World Heritage Ice Age art - with the oldest works of art of mankind.
During the winter months, the oldest giant barrel in the world can be seen in the cellar of Hohentuebingen Castle.
