LWL-Museum of Archaeology

LWL-Museum für Archäologie

The Museum of Archaeology in Herne is one of the most exciting museums in the Ruhr Area. A true highlight of your city break to the Ruhr Area.

The Museum of Archaeology in Herne presents around 10,000 finds from the 250,000-year history of mankind in Westphalia, and is designed on the model of an archaeological dig site. As a cultural highlight in Herne, the museum explains how life has changed over the millennia.

The unique design of the exhibition makes the museum the most modern of its kind in Europe. The prize-winning research laboratory in the Museum of Archaeology explains to visitors how scientists decode the tracks of the past. The exhibition is not limited to the region, but tackles global and forward-looking dimensions of archaeology and research.

Alongside the permanent exhibition, the Museum of Archaeology in Herne also regularly shows interesting special exhibitions. The most successful exhibition so far was held in the Capital of Culture Year, and entitled AufRuhr 1225!, a large medieval exhibition in the Ruhr Area.
