Catedral de la Verge de les Neus
Located at the highest point in the fortified city of Dalt Vila, the cathedral towers above all the historic and modern buildings in the city. With its gothic bell tower (14th/15th Century) and baroque interior (18th Century) the cathedral - along with the rest of the Old City, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999 - is a must for anyone interested in the cultural legacy of the island. The plans for building the cathedral were drawn up after the overthrow of the Arabian rulers by the Catalonians in August 1235 and were executed over the following centuries.
The Catholic church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of the Snow. However excavations have lead to conjecture that the location of today's cathedral has been used since the Punic, Roman and Moorish times as a place of worship. The museum, which opened in August 2006, is a highlight as it has more than 300 church treasures on display. The most valuable piece is a monstrance from the 14th Century.
