Bauernmuseum Kitzbühel
The farmhouse "Hinteroberau", situated on an old roman road (Römerweg), is in its construction the typical "salzburg-tyrolian chalet"-house and farmbuildings under one roof (farm-stead). A fine type of house with low pitched roof decorated with a little belfry, long balconies run the length of the upper story. Hinteroberau is first mentioned in documents in 1416. It was owned by a man called Altpekch and he and his family were bondage to the duke of Bavaria. A hundred year later it was changed to a freehold property. People lived and worked in Hinteroberau till 1970 - five centuries. Then the farm was not worked any more and to prevent it declining, the Rotary Club of Kitzbühel bought the farm in 1972 and turned it into a museum. Some rooms were already inaugurated in 1977 and since 1979 the whole house has been a museum and open to the public.
