Ready to celebrate International Museum Day 2016?

Among the celebrations to welcome the seasonal change during the month of May is International Museum Day – a highly anticipated event for the global museum community.

Around 18 May, excitement will grow in museums worldwide for the celebration of the 38th anniversary of a unifying and universal event, International Museum Day (IMD). The tradition began in 1977, when ICOM established this particular celebration – the occasion for thousands of participating museums to organise events and activities around a common theme and to commit to their visitors, highlighting the valuable role played by museums as institutions that serve society and its development.

It has always been celebrated on 18 May, but organisers can decide on the duration of the festivities: an hour, a night or an entire week – everyone can place museums in the spotlight as they best see fit. In 2015, more than 35,000 museums participated in the event in 145 countries across five continents.

In 2016, the theme "Museums and cultural landscapes" is also the theme of the ICOM General Conference, to be held in Milan, Italy, from 3 to 9 July 2016. This theme makes museums accountable for their landscapes, asking them to contribute knowledge and expertise and to play an active role in their management and upkeep.

To improve the visibility of these encounters and exchanges, ICOM has started this year with new means of communication, including an interactive map that has been created in addition to the traditional poster and the banner. All the National Committees and participating museums are invited to enrich this tool so as to contribute to the visibility and success of this major event for all museums around the world.
