The exhibition "Back to Light. A story of a fragile work of art"

The exhibition "Back to Light. A story of a fragile work of art".

The M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art presents some of the most valuable and oldest stained-glasses in Lithuania, which were out of the public sight for more than half a century. One of them – The Crucified with Angels was created in the Geyling workshops in Vienna in the late 19th century, and up to the present day it was known only from several black and white photographs.

Back to light, The Crucified was restored in 2016–2017 by the restorer of the highest category Daugis Bumbulis and Dalia Mulevičienė. It has retained many authentic pieces from the Geyling workshops. Two other stained-glasses St. John the Evangelist and St. Mark the Evangelist (might have been created by different workshops in Vienna) have complemented the exhibition later.

The context of the stained-glass exhibition is supplemented with valuable works of sacral art and folk baroque items of the late 15th century – and the 1st half of the 20th century, a certain part of them also complement the iconography of the mystery of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.

The project “History of inter-war art and culture, and sponsorship: cross-sections“ was partially supported by the Lithuanian Culture Council.

Exhibition works: 17 10 2017–07 01 2018
