William Turner was already in his time known as the painter of the elements. In his landscapes of earth, water, air and fire he combined new way and intensively explored their relationship to each other. His vision of the elements as a unity of forces which merge through energy, was linked to the then famous research in the natural sciences. New insight replaced the ancient doctrine of the four elements and made it free for a new kind of artistic approach to the world.
