Museum - Scene of Action

How does one expose a forged artwork, what is a thermo-hygrograph, how does one hang a Rembrandt on the wall, and what does in fact a curator do? These are just a few of the curious questions that the Wallraf will answer next summer. Given that 1 July 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the opening of Cologne’s oldest museum, the Wallraf will give itself pride of place at the centre of a large exhibition. With “Museum – Scene of Action”, the celebrated art gallery will grant its visitors a unique glimpse of the work done behind the scenes. And explain in a gripping yet comprehensible way all the different facets of museum work. Apart from the classical fields of collecting, researching, conserving and education, this also includes such topical aspects as sponsoring, marketing or utilities management. One highlight will be the public restoration of a masterpiece at the very centre of the exhibition. But it would be a shame to divulge too much at the moment.
