"Always on the Road. Paintings from private collections" – the anniversary exhibition of Pranas Domšaitis‘ (1880-1965) creation

The 135th birth anniversary of Pranas Domšaitis had induced the Lithuanian emigrant Art Foundation to organize the exhibition and present the artist‘s works from the Foundation and other private collections, such as Nerijus Dagilis, Rolandas Valiūnas, Ramunė and Antanas Zabuliai. The exhibition includes also the art pieces from the collections of M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art housed at Mykolas Žilinskas Art Gallery and donated by private collectors, and firstly, by the artist‘s widow Adelheid Armhold-Domšaitienė-Žvironienė (1901-1992) and her second husband Kazys Žvironas (1904-2001).

53 works – oil paintings, pastels, watercolors have been selected for the exhibition willing to illustrate in a rather concentrated manner a long life journey of the artist from rural Kruopynai (Lithuania Minor) to Cape Town in South Afrika.

Domšaitis‘ creation was influenced by prevailing in Germany and later in South Africa modern art trends of the twentieth century.

The artist's creative heritage unfolds an intriguing manner to create double-sided paintings. Actually, the reverse side is equally artistic as the averse one. Therefore, the exhibition presents to the public both sides of double-sided pictures.
