Our first special exhibition centres on the first battle of Ypres (October and November 1914). This battle was the last to involve open, mobile warfare on the Western Front, before entrenchment and stalemate set in. By the end of November 1914 the Green Howards had lost a generation of professional, trained soldiers.
“We were only clinging to the ground by our eyelids” Major General Edward Bulfin
The exhibition explores the role played by the Green Howards during the battle, and also track the experiences of soldiers and their families through diaries, paintings and personal effects.
Entry to the special exhibition is included in the museum admission price.
The exhibition runs until April 2015.
