ALIUTĖ MEČYS‘ (1943–2013) CREATION

The exhibition Aliutė. Artist Aliutė Mečys‘ Person and Creation presents for the first time in Lithuania an exhaustive survey of a Lithuanian-German artist‘s creative legacy. M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art discloses shocking layers of still unknown to us artist‘s creation (just a year after her death). On display – paintings, drawings, scenography sketches, posters for performances created in 1978–2004, also personal items, documents, letters.

Aliutė Mečys‘ creation is permeated with a woman-artist‘s inner world visions which are rendered by  means of realistic and horribly surrealistic images. A recurrent motif in her paintings and drawings are faces of A. Mečys and her friend, a famous avant-garde composer György Ligeti (1923–2006).

Aliutė Mečys’ painting  implies apocalyptic themes – human decay, urbanistic catastrophe. The essence of all existential disasters is demonstrated by means of macabre situations, ramshackled or hypertrophic, geriatric, hybrid, masked and blind people. The artist’s creation may seem shocking and disturbing, that’s why the exhibition is not suited for children under 7 and for sensitive people.

A. Mečys made illustrations for György Ligeti music plates. Her paintings were exhibited in art galleries and museums in Germany, they were acquired by German art collectors. Yet, the major part of her creation belongs to Hamburg Forum of Artists‘ Legacy (Forum für Künstlernachlässe).

The exhibition was organized due to the co-operation between M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art and Hamburg Forum of Artists‘ Legacy and the gallery Aukso pjūvis.
