Native, Visitor or Invader?

Muntjac-deer_Lh2010_600.jpgContinuing the long tradition of hosting exhibitions from the Ulster Museum, the new temporary exhibition at Armagh County Museum is called Native, Visitor or Invader. Whilst showcasing some of our native species and migrant visitors, it will also highlight the threats they face from some non-native (alien) ‘invaders’. Among plants, most of Ireland’s non-native species were introduced deliberately, either for garden use or to bring some economic benefit. For example, nearly all freshwater invasive plants represent ‘escapees’ from garden ponds. Some are all too easily capable of spreading into local lakes and rivers where, once established, they can quickly dominate and seriously degrade local habitats.
