Exhibition: Defining a Line

His small-scale steel sculptures reference the notions of ‘home’ and ‘displacement’ and are influenced by over 25 years of journeying between his home in Derbyshire and his home in Ireland, the country of his birth. The new work plays with scale and creates a tension between the different sculptural forms, communicating opposites such as stable and unstable, comfortable and uncomfortable, real and unreal. Each of these scenarios tries to address notions of belonging, identity and home, using recognisable domestic objects such as chairs, ladders and houses. These are often subverted or balanced precariously on one another, playing with scale and reality. This is the most intimate and personal work created by Denis, who is well known for his public art sculptures.
