Josef Koudelka: Vestiges / Sledi 1991-2012

Jakopič Gallery is traditionally one of the main exhibition venues of the festival Month of Photography. As a part of the festival in 2014 we will present an exhibition of one of the world masters of photography, Josef Koudelka (born in 1938 in Moravia, a member of the famous photographic agency Magnum).

From May until September the exhibition Vestiges 1991-2012 will be presented at the Jakopič Gallery. Between 1991 and 2012, Josef Koudelka completed a long journey around the nineteen countries bordering the Mediterranean, stopping at over two hundred Greek and Roman archaeological sites. This was an unprecedented exploration. Before Koudelka, nobody had attempted to make such a comprehensive photographic record of these  historical vestiges with so much persistence and so little assistance. His aim is to use art to reappropriate a world that is escaping us and that we could loose – a world where the mind alternates between reason and faith, law and liberty; a world, “whose heaps of rubble and inexhaustible hopes we carry within us” according to Jacques Berque. Transforming rubble into hope – that is what Koudelka achieves in this exceptional journey, the different stages of which are presented in this exhibition. This series is also thematically linked with the anniversary, which will mark 2000 years of Emona (Emona 2000).
